The short of it
Following below is a dense wall of text explaining what we do with the data we’re given. In layman’s terms, here’s all you need to know:
- Reto collects certain information about you and the messages that have been reacted to to operate.
- You can export a log of the information Reto stores about you by using /privacy personal export.
- If you’re a server admin, you can export a log of the information Reto stores about your server by using /privacy server export.
- You can delete your data off of Reto’s database with /privacy personal delete. At the moment, your data is not removed from Reto’s database when deleting your Discord account.
- Global Discovery lets you see messages from servers that have been set to Public (opt-in) and have +5 Global Karma. If a server you’re in is set to Public, you can personally opt-out using /privacy personal discovery.
- We will never sell your data.
The Reto Discord bot
The Reto bot for Discord stores a variety of data to function.
- Users
- Your User ID, which we store for relating messages, Karma totals and other uses of Reto back to you, but can also be used to display your username and avatar. This data is stored indefinitely after your first received reaction.
- The ID of your Messages that have been reacted to at least once. These are stored as Message IDs, and are only used by the bot on command to retrieve the contents, attachments, and other miscellaneous data. The contents of your messages can not be read by Reto developers, except when reported by an user in Global Discovery. These messages are currently stored indefinitely - proper limits will be implemented before Reto launches.
- Your Reactions to other User’s messages when a Reactable is triggered.
- Selected Messages which you’ve right-clicked on and selected Select this message on the Apps menu. This data is stored for a maximum of an hour.
- Reto specific information, such as Karma totals and configuration settings.
- Privacy related settings, like the ability to store messages or set your account as Private.
- Servers (or Guilds)
- Your server’s User ID, which we use to trace back server-specific settings, like Reactables.
- IDs of Roles, Channels and Emojis that have been used with Reto throughout the Setup process.
- Messages of your Users that have been reacted to. See the Users and Discovery sections for more information.
- Administrative
- The User and Server IDs of developer accounts to show exclusive Badges and enable developer only commands.
We utilise this data to operate Reto, with features such as Leaderboards, Message Pinning, Discovery and Profiles. We don’t process this data outside of the Reto Discord bot, website, or their database. We will never sell or rent this data to third parties.
You can export this data to a .JSON file using /privacy personal export. If you choose to delete your data from the Reto database, you can do so under /privacy personal delete. Please keep in mind that data from you is stored as soon as someone reacts to a message of yours - if you want this data to remain out of Reto’s database forever, remove Reto from any Discord servers you’re in.
Discovery
Discovery is a feature in development for the Reto Discord bot that allows users to browse messages on the current Server, and those from other Servers which have set themselves to Public.
The random message pool used on Global Discovery is composed of messages from Public Servers with 5 Global Karma or more from Users that have not opted-out of Discovery. If you do not wish for messages from your server to be shared, you can disable Public Server on the last step of /setup, or by using /privacy server discovery.
If you form part of a Public Server and don’t want your messages to form part of Discovery on any server, you can use /privacy personal discovery to disable your messages from being used in Discovery.
Messages in Discovery can be reported by reacting with 🚩. The reported message will be viewable by Reto Staff, and if found to violate Reto’s Terms of Service, removed from the pool of publically available messages.
The Reto website
The Reto website is hosted using Cloudflare, and utilises many of their built-in statistics - as such, the developers of Reto have anonymised data referring to the user’s country and pages visited, none of which can be traced back to you. Cloudflare claims not to sell or rent your personal data. For more information, please refer to the Cloudflare Privacy Policy.
We currently do not store cookies on your device for any purpose throughout the Reto website.
The Reto Legacy Discord bot
Alongside the data that the current iteration of Reto saves to its database, the Reto Legacy Discord bot stores:
- Users
- A list of Discord server IDs both you and Reto are both in.
- User messages that have been reacted to at least once. As opposed to the current version of Reto, Reto Legacy stores some of this data (such as text, embeds, attachments and whether it was sent on a NSFW channel) on its database, without referencing Discord’s API on future calls. This data is stored for up to 30 days, or indefinitely, if the user has enabled Permanent Storage.
- Miscellaneous Reto-specific data that isn’t available in its newer iteration, such as data for the Holiday 2022 event.
Reto Legacy reached End of Life on April 6th, 2023.
You can inspect its source code here. The Reto developers don’t make themselves responsible for other data that self-hosting individuals may decide to store on their personal instances of Reto Legacy.
All data Reto Legacy stores is encrypted.
Retool Waitlist
We store email addresses sent voluntarily through the Reto Waitlist indefinitely. These emails will only be used for promotional purposes, once when the Open Beta (or other opportunities for the User to preview the Discord bot early) is available, and once when the Full Launch is available. The emails may also be used for big Reto updates, and changes to the Privacy Policy and Terms of Service. More information about how to unsubscribe from this mail list will be available once the Reto Open Beta launches.
Reto’s Waitlist is provided by Launchlist. You can read their Privacy Policy here.
Updates to the Reto Privacy Policy
The Reto Privacy Policy is updated regularly as more functionality is aded to the Reto Discord bot and website. These updates are put in effect immediately, and by using the Reto website and continuing past the Privacy Policy setup step through the Discord bot, you (and the rest of Users in your Server) implicitly agree to their terms.
