Leading up to launch, we’ll be showcasing new and upcoming features of Retool in this very blog. You’re already familiar with Pinnable Channels - your #best-ofs and such that the most voted messages in your server will land on. Today, we’re showcasing a new way of looking at your server’s messages.
Introducing Discover
Coming with Retool Open Beta, /discover server is a brand new command that anyone on your server can use. Run it and Reto will send back to you a message from the server you’re on at random!
On the Button bar, you’ll see a couple options. Move to the next (or the previous) message with the arrow keys, or in case you missed it, react to the message with the provided Reactable buttons. You can also jump to the original message with the 🔗 button!
No Reactables? No problem! Even if you can’t use a specific Reactable on this server (for example, if your server has disabled Minus), you’ll still be presented with the Reto defaults.
Customize your Feed
By default, the posts you see on Discover will be completely random. That doesn’t mean you can’t choose to look at something else, though!
Dig into the optional Sort settings, and you’ll be able to see posts:
- 👤 By Member: Select a specific server member that you want to see the messages of!
- 💞 By Karma: See messages from most to least voted! You can even see the Ranking of each message - just like Reto Legacy’s Post Leaderboard!
- ✨ Newest: In reverse chronological order.
- 🦖 Oldest: In chronological order. Nothing like the classics.
These options are only the beginning - after launch, expect to see some additional filtering settings!
Not just on your server
After Open Beta, we’ll also be implementing /discover global! Unlike Server, only messages with 5 Karma or above from servers and users that have marked themselves as Public will be shown here.
You’ll also be able to react to other people’s messages across Servers! While these won’t be reflected on Server Karma totals, the person you’re reacting to will get a nice boost in Global Karma.
There’s tons of stuff to consider, and we want to tread carefully here, so you won’t see it live on Reto for a while! Reporting, NSFW filtering and anti-scraping features are essential to make sure Global Discovery is safe for everyone. We also want to make sure everyone is well aware that their messages may be viewable in Discover - it’s great for big, moderated servers, but if you’re just messing around with friends, you might want to turn that off!
Public Servers are an opt-in feature, and server moderators can make their server Private on /setup, or using /privacy server discovery. Users are Public by default, but you can disable this using /privacy personal discovery. We’re looking into ways to make this opt-in by default without pestering you while you try to use the bot! Read our Privacy Policy for more information.
