After many years of hard work re-building Reto from scratch, the Reto development team is happy to announce that The Retool Update is available in the same bot you know and love right now!

Coming back from Reto Legacy? No changes are needed: we’ve kept good tally of you and your friends’ Karma totals and server settings. Still, there’s so much new in this major update that we’d still recommend you take it from the top and re-run the new /setup command to enjoy the new features from this update.

What’s new with Reto?

Reto’s been re-factored from the ground up for a new era of Discord. The full list of changes are too many to count: if you’re curious, you should check out the new Documentation or use the /newsletter command in your server to flip through all the shiny changes. Here’s the highlight reel:

• 🤖 Slash Commands: No more guessing what that one command that does the one thing is called: you can use Discord’s universal / command key to see every action and argument you can take right from Reto! It’s also prettier: we’re taking advantage of all of Discord’s new functionality with Modals and Buttons to make Reto more intuitive than ever to use.

• 🚀 Faster, leaner, meaner: The new codebase (Discord.JS, Node, MongoDB) can now run 24/7 without breaking a sweat, no more random outages leaving you Karmaless in the middle of an argument or 20-second delays before you interacting with a message and the bot getting the hint.

• ⚙️ Customize everything: When first welcoming Reto into your server, flip through a new Advanced Setup wizard to select your chosen Emoji, #best-of channel, Server Karma name, and so much more. You can even opt-out of functionality if your server doesn’t need it!

• 🎨 No, seriously, we mean everything: Heart, Crush and 10 have new, more intuitive names: Plus, Minus and Pin. They’re all Reactables, the heart at the core of Reto: when you react to a message with any of these emoji, magic happens. You can swap the functionality of the default ones at any time, or create your own Reactables and assign them custom Actions to make Reto your own!

• 📌 Better Pins: Your Pinned Messages look glam with built-in Jump to Message buttons, support for up to 4 images, videos, link embeds and more. Also, you can react to a Pinned Message and it’ll give the Karma to the original, how cool is that?

• 💪 Power to the People: Ever heard of that Starboard thing making the rounds? You can now set Pin Thresholds; when a message hits an amount of Karma it’ll send itself to your #best-of channel automatically.

• ⛓️ Chain Messages: Ever pinned something funny out of context and it ended up making no sense when seen through #best-of? You can now right-click on messages to add them to a Chain. When you pin the source message, the whole conversation will be included!

• 🔎 Discover: What?! Post Leaderboards are evolving! Use Discover to relive the best moments from your server (or your own, or someone else’s), with built-in filtering tools and the ability to vote on posts as you scroll!

• ✨ And much more… Guide commands to introduce people to your Karma system, Leaderboard infinite scroll, native Discord emoji for Reactables and multi-emoji support, revamped Autoreact, and plenty more! The Retool Update evolves Reto from a simple Karma bot to a full-fledged Reaction Toolkit.

Reto 2.0.0 launches in a state of Open Beta. While the bot has been tested over the months and years of development, it has yet to be ran at this scale! Smaller patches will be coming over the next couple of weeks to make sure everything is in top shape.

Thanks for sticking with us for so long! 🫶 When plans were made to re-build Reto into a modern version of itself in 2022, there was no way of knowing how long and arduous the path to get here would become. The only reason this work was completed was because of the hundreds of servers who depend on Reto for their community, and the many server owners who are passionate about it, something unguessable back when the original version Reto was birthed out of a hackathon in 2019.

At the moment, in order to focus our attention in other projects, no major updates for Reto are planned at the moment, beyond minor changes and stability patches.

As a gesture of good faith, and as thanks for sticking with us for so long, the Retool codebase has been made source-available under the Polyform Non-Commercial License. This means you can make changes and improvements to the bot and host your own private version of it for you and your friends, no matter what happens to the main Reto bot.

The original plan for Reto’s 2.0.0 public release was to pivot the bot into a freemium model, with functionality for power users being locked behind a paywall to support development. With this Open Beta release, much of the functionality that was originally planned to be paywalled (namely, advanced Reactable customization) has been made public for everyone to enjoy.
